(Jun 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

The longest reign as #1 in boxing was ended in just two rounds by Manny Pacquiao this month as he destroyed the four year champion Ricky Hatton at the start of the month to solidify his number one pound for pound status. The win drops Ricky Hatton from my pound for pound top ten for the first time since the win over Tszyu in 2005, marking the entrance of Chad Dawson into the top 10. Dawson enters over the likes of Celestino Caballero, Miguel Cotto (who’s current spot in most peoples top tens still baffles me), Tomasz Adamek (who Dawson beat), Chris John and Ivan Calderon based on an ever increasing impressive resume. A win over someone like Bernard Hopkins will propel Dawson into the top five. In what was otherwise a pretty quiet month for the sport, the bantamweights got some new blood into the top five with Yohnny Perez’s knockout win over longtime top contender Silce Mabuza last weekend. Perez is a young, exciting fighter who will likely give the winner of this months Darchinyan-Agebeko fight a good scrap.

(May 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

Most of the action this month coming at 122 and 168lbs, the big win of the month was Paull Williams domination over Winky Wright. Due to the one sidedness of this fight, I’ve moved Williams into the top three pound for pound behind Marquez and Pacquiao. Both Hopkins and Vazquez have been sort of inactive and a win by either of them will likely be enough to move Williams down the list, but on current form Williams’ wins over Wright (who had not been dominated like that ever even by Hopkins) and Margarito puts him right up there in my opinion.

(Apr 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

The interesting thing I found this month is how stacked the Bantamweight division is becoming. Last month both Fernando Montiel and Cristian Mijares made their move there to join the likes of Hasegawa who just made the 8th successful defence of his WBC belt with a 1st round KO of Vusi Malinga. The division is that stacked that long time 115lb #1 Mijares lost his 118lb debut (which could be down to ill-effects suffered in the Darchinyan beatdown though. The thing though is that the 115lb division which six months ago was one of the strongest is now probably the weakest after Darchinyan cleaned out all of the top contenders bar Montiel. Now that Darchinyan will face Joseph Agbeko at 118lbs, the division will be a wasteland come July.
The rankings are based on all fights that happened before April 1st 2009, so if there’s a result that happened on March 1st (I’m using boxrec’s calender) then it’ll be included next month. There are two big absentees from the pound for pound rankings. First of all there was the suspension of Margarito. Due to his suspension, I’m removing him from my rankings until he is either cleared or his suspension is up. The other is Joe Calzaghe who announced his retirement last month and thus will no longer appear in the rankings (until he gets bored and comes back that is). This paves way for Pavlik to re-enter the top ten and I’ve filled out the list with Darchinyan who I think deserves it after effectively cleaning out one of the more competitive divisions in boxing.

Boxing Breakdown: Juan Diaz vs Juan Manuel Marquez

Ring Magazine Lightweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez puts his title on the line against former WBA, WBO and IBF Lightweight titlist Juan Diaz tomorrow. It will be the first defence of the title Marquez won from Joel Casamayor last year with an 11th round knockout. Diaz is coming off a win over Michael Katsidis over 12 rounds last September, which was his first fight back since losing his titles to Nate Campbell last March. With Campbell failing to make weight against Ali Funeka earlier this month, his WBA and WBO titles will be on the line for this fight which is a rare situation of the sanctioning bodies working for boxing’s best interests rather then their own.

The fight is interesting. Diaz is young and fairly inexperienced compared to Marquez although he has a very high workrate and is the naturally bigger man in this fight. Marquez on the other hand likes to counter punch and has won world titles in two previous weight classes, although he will likely be giving away a few pounds after the weigh in. This fight comes down to who is able to force their gameplan on the other. Marquez won’t hang with Diaz if he is forced to exchange, he just isn’t busy enough to handle Diaz in a dog fight. On the other hand, if Diaz can’t force the pace in this fight, he’ll be picked apart by the much better technical boxer in Marquez.

I’m leaning towards the naturally bigger man in Diaz in this fight. It’ll be close and it’s one of those fights I really have no idea how it will go down, but I think Diaz’s workrate and size will take it’s toll on Marquez down the stretch. Diaz excels in the later rounds and I think thats where the fight will be won with Diaz coming over the top of Marquez in the last 3-4 rounds. Marquez should have an advantage early on and will need to do some damage early to get Diaz’s respect. Marquez will likely be in control early but Diaz will slowly turn the tide and take over, winning a close decision. Juan Diaz by split decision.

On the undercard, WBA Featherweight Champion Chris John makes his US debut against top five contender Rocky Juarez. For those who haven’t seen John fight, this is a fight to check out because John is an exceptionally good fighter. He’d likely be top ten pound for pound had he fought in the US a bit more. Juarez will provide a decent test for him, but won’t be able to handle the well roundedness of John’s game. John should outbox Juarez with little to no difficulty. Chris John by unanimous decision.

(Feb 09) Angry Fight Fan Boxing World Rankings

I’ve managed to set this up with a system that will allow me to update these monthly without too much trouble. Some interesting action this month; Mosley cracked the pound for pound list for the first time since he lost to Winky Wright back in 2004. The Welterweight division is very interesting now with the top three guys all having split wins over another. Hopefully, if Margarito gets cleared of his hand wraps incident (any suspension and I’ll probably drop him from the rankings completely), Margarito takes on Cotto and Mosley fights Clottey like what has been proposed and the winners meet later in the year. Whatever fight comes out of that series of matches will be great. I’ve also included a schedule of what significant fights are on next month and the lightweights again are all fighting in the same month which should move the rankings around a lot.

(Jan 09) Angry Fight Fan Boxing World Rankings

They’re finally here, the long promised rankings done entirely by me based on nothing but who I think deserves to be ranked where. A few months ago I decided not to do what Ring Magazine does which is have their own champions (similar to the ABC rankings) and then 10 challengers because I really couldn’t be bothered doing the research again to find out who is the real champion. Note to all newbies; it’s not as easy as who I think the best fighter is. It’s based on who beat who and I think the whole thing will be a lot easier on me in the long run and make the chances of me putting these up every month greater then if I had to worry about champions. I may introduce them in the future, but I doubt it. One thing I was working on was having my own champions based off any 1 vs 2 fights that happen in the future or if one fighter has unified all four belts and there is a direct lineage from him to the current champion then making him champion (ie Hopkins unified all four belts, lost to Taylor who lost to Pavlik thus making Pavlik the current champion) but for now I’ll leave it as it is.

Boxing Breakdown: Andrade vs Bute and more

With the UFC taking the cake in terms of quality fight action, I thought I’d get the focus off the boxing and onto the UFC. However, I can’t do that without mentioning these four fights that are up this weeken because despite not being as big as other boxing matches that are on around this time, they still deserve the attention because there’s some good fights on this weekend. Some big action in the Super Middleweight division takes place with the return of Mikkel Kessler as he takes on unheralded Danilio Haussler for the WBA strap as well as a fight between two of the better 168lbers getting around when Lucian Bute defends his IBF title against formidable challenger Librado Andrade. Also fighting this weekend is #1 Featherweight Chris John as well as a battle for the WBC Cruiserweight title.

Librado Andrade vs Lucian Bute
(IBF Super Middleweight title)
Canadian/Romanian #2 Super Middleweight Lucian Bute defends his IBF title against top challenger Librado Andrade tomorrow in this weekends biggest boxing match. While these guys aren’t extremely well known, both of these guys are excellent fighters and this should be a very good fight.

Librado Andrade
The tall Mexican slugger has made a successful comeback since dropping a one sided unanimous decision to then WBC/WBA champion Mikkel Kessler in March of last year. Three stoppage wins with two of them over good calibre opponents (Yusaf Mack and Robert Stieglitz; both fights were wars) has given Andrade a second chance at the title. Andrade is a strange style of fighter; he has the sterotypical Mexican slugger style but like welterweight Antonio Margarito he also has height on his side which can make for a dangerous combination against a fighter who lacks good footwork. Andrade is basically a super middleweight version of Antonio Margarito although he’s not on Margarito’s level. Still he’s a dangerous opponent for any super middleweight out there.
For Andrade to win this fight he’ll have to make Bute fight him. Bute is definately the better boxer out of the two, but he also has some raw aggression which might work against him if Andrade is to land early. The key for this fight for Andrade is for him to impose himself in the first four rounds and do some damage in order to make Bute slower in the middle and later rounds of this fight. He has to force Bute into the ropes and work the body and his uppercut and he has to take Bute’s legs away from him so he can’t dictate when the fight takes place and when it doesn’t. If Andrade doesn’t let Bute know his in a fight in the first four rounds, Bute will run away with the decision.

Lucian Bute
Bute has been on a tear since he stopped Kabary Salem three years ago and Sakio Bika aside, no one has overly tested this young fighter. With his win over Sakio Bika in June of last year, Bika set up a clash with Alejandro Berrio for the IBF 168lb title and didn’t disappoint with an 11th round stoppage to take the title. Bute’s last outing was in February, when he battered former WBA Middleweight champion William Joppy before stopping him in the 10th. With 18 knockouts from his 22 wins, Bute has a solid punch. However, he is probably more of a skilled boxer and his knockout record is more to do with how good his skills are rather then his lethal punching power.
For Bute to win this fight he needs to box Andrade and frustrate the Mexican. Bute definately has the better skillset out of the two fighters and against a tough, strong fighter like Andrade it’s in his best interest to use it. He needs to get in and out of range and use his superior hand and foot speed to land and get away from Andrade. If Andrade tags him he needs to keep his cool and avoid trading punches with him too frequently because despite never having been in trouble in the ring, Andrade is probably the more durable of the two boxers although I could be wrong about that and Bute may have the better chin in which case he could very well benefit from outpunching the puncher and breaking his will, I’m speculating here. Bute’s best bet is to dictate the pace of the fight and fight when he has to and try and frustrate Andrade.

Prediction
I’m sticking with the favourite and picking Lucian Bute to win a hardfought unanimous decision after some shaky moments. Bute is definately the safe bet in this fight because the unknowns about him shouldn’t really have a big effect on the outcome of the fight if he fights smart. If it turns out that his chin isn’t that great or he doesn’t like body punches very much and he wants to trade with Andrade he’ll do well to last 12 rounds but if thats the case and he boxes he should still have the ability to outscore the Mexican. The wildcard in this fight is the 8″ reach advantage Andrade has which could cause Bute a lot of problems if he tries to box from the outside. However with the shorter range Andrade likes to punch at he might very well negate that reach advantage himself and it won’t play into effect as much as it could. My advice to anyone who can watch this fight (for free, although its better then a lot of PPVs down here) is to watch it as it should be a very entertaining battle. Bute by unanimous decision.

Chris John vs Hiroyuki Enoki
(WBA Featherweight title)
The man ranked number one Featherweight in the World (by anyone who knows anything about boxing that is) Chris John returns to take on undefeated OPBF (Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation; its basically like Australasia’s version of the European title although not nearly as Historical) Featherweight champion Hiroyuki Enoki. Not much is known of Enoki, although I’ve kept my eye on this guy since he beat Australia’s former two time World title challenger Nedal Hussein two years ago. Enoki drew his last fight against undefeated Takahiro Aoh in a WBA eliminator. Aoh since challenged WBC titlist Oscar Larios and took the Mexican to a split decision so if thats anything to go by then Enoki could be a challenge to John. However, I really think John is in a league of his own in this weight class. He has excellent boxing skills and good power to match and I think he’ll pick Enoki apart before stopping him in the late rounds. Chris John by 10th round knockout.

Giacobbe Fragomeni vs Rudolf Kraj
(WBC Cruiserweight title)
Did I just read everyones mind when they said ‘Who?’ Well, while I know a little bit about both of these guys, I haven’t seen either fight apart from highlights of Fragomeni’s loss to David Haye. Kraj is a highly touted prospect after beating another highly touted prospect in Matt Godfrey in a WBC Eliminator. Fragomeni is a good fighter but from what I saw of him against Haye I can’t see him handling the better names of the division unless he’s improved a lot. I’m picking Kraj based of his hype more then anything as I haven’t seen him. Rudolf Kraj by unanimous decision. Although with the fight taking place in Italy a hometown decision is on the cards. If you’re reading this for advice when it comes to putting money on boxing, stear clear of this fight unless you get better then 4-1 on either of them; way too many unknowns here.

Mikkel Kessler vs Danilio Haussler
(WBA Super Middleweight title)
Instead of facing former opponent Anthony Mundine (who Kessler whipped over 12 rounds), Mundine decided to vacate the title in order to drop down to Middleweight (he’s since fought at the super middleweight limit which basically shows he just didn’t want another whipping) which leaves this fight. Kessler is a killer and I don’t see him having too many problems with the unheralded Haussler although you never know in this sport. Still, I’m not keen to have a bet on Haussler even at 11-1 whichis what sportstab is paying for Haussler right now. Mikkel Kessler by 4th round knockout in a fight that hopefully sets up another unification fight in this division against either Andrade-Bute or Lacy-Taylor.
