Boxing Breakdown: Khan-McCloskey, Berto-Ortiz, Juanma vs Salido

A fairly quiet weekend ahead this weekend with no overly marquee matchups in either boxing or MMA. HBO is running a show featuring two of its younger champions fighting in two main events in different countries. The main fight sees Amir Khan taking what is essentially a keep busy fight against Paul McCloskey before he takes on Timothy Bradley mid this year for the unified Junior Welterweight championship. In the other main event, Andre Berto defends his WBC Welterweight title against Victor Ortiz. Also this weekend we have featherweight titlist Juan Manuel Lopez defending his title against Orlando Salido in Puerto Rico.

Amir Khan vs Paul McCloskey
Khan ended up settling on opponent Paul McCloskey for his hometown fight. I’ll be honest, I know nothing of McCloskey, I’ve had to “boxrec” him to find anything about him out at all. He’s the current European champion and there’s no one on his record who’s name I’m overly familiar with. Combine that with the facts; this is an optional defence for Khan and the promoters have been having lots of trouble selling TV rights to anyone in the UK and I don’t think McCloskey is going to cause Khan any serious threat. Khan seemes to get better with every fight under Freddie Roach, and he seems to take guys like McCloskey out quickly. The one thing I notice with Khan is that he has a significant loss in power aftter the first 4-5 rounds of a fight, somethindg I don’t think will be a problem in this fight but something I wanted to say to make it seem like I put a bit more into this fight then I actually did.

Andre Berto vs Victor Ortiz
This is a fight that I think a few years ago no one would have predicted taking place, well at least not in this situation. Ortiz was being built up for a while as the next De La Hoya, until Marcos Maidana derailed him in their 2009 war. Ortiz was always featured on the marquee shows and there was hype around his fights, even when he fought the likes of Carlos Maussa and Jeffrey Resto. He headlined his own card fighting Mike Arnaoutis. Even after his loss to Maidana he was built back up; HBO wanted a four man tournament with Bradley-Alexander in one bracket and Khan-Ortiz in the other. The only problem was Ortiz had to get through Lamont Peterson on the Khan-Maidana undercard and he didn’t, they drew making the matchup unmarketable.
Andre Berto on the other hand was always fighting on the undercards of the lesser shows and he wasn’t given easy matchups. He fought David Estrada in what wasn’t a gimme fight on the Pavlik-Taylor I undercard. He fought Steve Forbes on the Mosley-Margarito undercard. They put him against Luis Collazo, a guy who had given both Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley awkward nights. Berto is a fighter who has come up as old school as you can in the new age of boxing without taking a loss, he’s fought in hard fights that weren’t a guarantee he’d win against guys with different styles who were going to test him and he’s come through. Now they’re essentially feeding their failed pin-up boy to him to showcase their new up and coming star.
Ortiz has a chance in this fight. Despite what people say about his heart the kid comes to fight. He’s got knockout power in his hands and good boxing skills. But against Berto I think he’s going to be shut down by about the 4th round. Berto has an ability to shut guys down with his hand speed and Ortiz’s biggest problem is his lack of adaptability. He was winning his fight with Lamont Peterson handily and then Peterson made some adjustments and Ortiz couldn’t figure them out. Berto is every bit as skilled and quick and adaptable as Peterson, except his bigger, more experienced and battle tested. Ortiz is going to need everything to go his way for him to win this fight, and even then I think he’ll also have to hope Berto has a bad night.

Juan Manuel Lopez vs Orlando Salido
Lopez had a solid 2010, taking out WBO featherweight champion Steve Luevano in his 126lb debut then defending twice against Bernabe Concepcion in a two round war and closing the year out with another war against Rafael Marquez, stopping him after 8. Salido is a step down from those three, but has been around for a while having fought Juan Manuel Marquez and Roberto Guerrero a few years back (he actually beat Guerrero before he failed the drug test) and is coming off a closish points loss to Yuri Gamboa, the  man people have been calling for Juanma to fight. I guess thats why this fight has been made, Gamboa last year took Rogers Mtagwa out in two rounds after Mtagwa nearly took Juanma out in his previous fight. Now Juanma is looking to do the same I guess. Salido has a good chin, so he’ll probably hang around for a while, but he won’t pose a serious threat for Lopez who’ll score a late stoppage or a wide decision win. Hopefully this sets up the much hyped fight with Gamboa, a fight I like the Cuban in by knockout. Also in action is junior lightweight prospect Luis Cruz who takes on Martin Honorio.

(Jun 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

The longest reign as #1 in boxing was ended in just two rounds by Manny Pacquiao this month as he destroyed the four year champion Ricky Hatton at the start of the month to solidify his number one pound for pound status. The win drops Ricky Hatton from my pound for pound top ten for the first time since the win over Tszyu in 2005, marking the entrance of Chad Dawson into the top 10. Dawson enters over the likes of Celestino Caballero, Miguel Cotto (who’s current spot in most peoples top tens still baffles me), Tomasz Adamek (who Dawson beat), Chris John and Ivan Calderon based on an ever increasing impressive resume. A win over someone like Bernard Hopkins will propel Dawson into the top five. In what was otherwise a pretty quiet month for the sport, the bantamweights got some new blood into the top five with Yohnny Perez’s knockout win over longtime top contender Silce Mabuza last weekend. Perez is a young, exciting fighter who will likely give the winner of this months Darchinyan-Agebeko fight a good scrap.

(May 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

Most of the action this month coming at 122 and 168lbs, the big win of the month was Paull Williams domination over Winky Wright. Due to the one sidedness of this fight, I’ve moved Williams into the top three pound for pound behind Marquez and Pacquiao. Both Hopkins and Vazquez have been sort of inactive and a win by either of them will likely be enough to move Williams down the list, but on current form Williams’ wins over Wright (who had not been dominated like that ever even by Hopkins) and Margarito puts him right up there in my opinion.

(Apr 09) Angry Fight Fan World Boxing Rankings

The interesting thing I found this month is how stacked the Bantamweight division is becoming. Last month both Fernando Montiel and Cristian Mijares made their move there to join the likes of Hasegawa who just made the 8th successful defence of his WBC belt with a 1st round KO of Vusi Malinga. The division is that stacked that long time 115lb #1 Mijares lost his 118lb debut (which could be down to ill-effects suffered in the Darchinyan beatdown though. The thing though is that the 115lb division which six months ago was one of the strongest is now probably the weakest after Darchinyan cleaned out all of the top contenders bar Montiel. Now that Darchinyan will face Joseph Agbeko at 118lbs, the division will be a wasteland come July.
The rankings are based on all fights that happened before April 1st 2009, so if there’s a result that happened on March 1st (I’m using boxrec’s calender) then it’ll be included next month. These rankings are my own work and have absolutely no reflection on any ABC rankings or anything else but my own opinion. Please feel free to flame me in the comments section.

Boxing Breakdown: Julio v Kirkland Triple Header

Later today, three very interesting fights with two of boxings top prospects as well as a former world titlist takes place. In the main event, two knockout artists in undefeated James Kirkland (24-0, 21 KOs) and Joel Julio (34-2, 31 KOs) will face off in what looks to be an explosive battle. Also on the card is 21 year old Victor Ortiz who has made a name for himself destroying good fighters on the Oscar De La Hoya undercards. He takes on tough Mike Arnatouis, who’s only lost twice against Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres. The third fight sees former IBF Featherweight champion Robert Guerrero fighting for the 2nd time since relinquishing his belt and moving up in weight. His opponent is 21 year old Indonesian Daud Yordan, who there is little known about.

Julio v Kirkland
I’m giving the edge to Julio for a few reasons but they’re all small. First of all, Julio’s height and southpaw stance will be awkward for the reckless style of Kirkland. Then there’s the experience and level of competition that Julio has been fighting at as well as Julio probably has the better defence and arguably the better chin out of these two. There should be a lot of action early in this fight but I think Julio will be getting his shots in more frequently while taking the odd bomb from Kirkland in return. Kirklands still young and has a lot to learn, sort of where Julio was a few years ago and I think this will be a good learning curve for him. I don’t think he has the composure to last in a fight like this though and I think after 3-4 rounds of two way action, Julio will take over and stop Kirkland in the mid-late rounds. Joel Julio by 7th round knockout.

Arnaoutis vs Ortiz
I think Ortiz is almost as good as the hype around him suggests he is. I think he is better then a few of the guys I rate ahead of him in the top ten, but that Ortiz doesn’t have the names to put him there yet. Arnaoutis will provide a stiff test for the 21 year old, but I think Ortiz will be firmly in control of the fight. Mike will probably last the distance, but I think he’ll go down once or twice in doing it. Victor Ortiz by unanimous decision.

Guerrero vs Yordan
It’s hard to know much about guys like Yordan who have mostly fought in their native country without being overly tested. Yordan was on the undercard of the Marquez-Casamayor card last year although I’m pretty sure they didn’t show his fight. With fights like these I always go with the experienced fighter because most of the time the young undefeated fighter doesn’t live up to the hype and I think it’ll be the same thing here. Robert Guerrero by 6th round knockout.

Ortiz/Kirkland step up in class

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, Ring Magazine’s prospect of the year Victor Ortiz has finally stepped up his competition:

Junior welterweight Victor Ortiz, the 2008 ESPN.com prospect of the year, will take on former titleholder Vivian Harris in a crossroads bout.

 ”We have agreed to the terms, but I am waiting for the paperwork. But the fight is on,” Harris promoter Gary Shaw said. “For Vivian, if he wants to continue the quest, he has to beat Victor Ortiz or there may not be a tomorrow. For Ortiz, it will be a major notch on his belt to beat somebody like Vivian Harris.”

Ortiz (23-1-1, 18 KOs), 21, is one of the fastest rising talents in boxing. Given the prime co-featured slot on the Dec. 6 Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya undercard, Ortiz overwhelmed Jeff Resto for a second-round knockout in his closing argument for prospect of the year honors.

After his last ‘fight’ everyone was calling for Ortiz to fight someone who could test him. I have to say that Vivian Harris has to be just about the perfect opponent to gauge where Ortiz is at as a fighter. The 21 year old is really stepping up his opposition with this fight and a win over Harris makes him a clear-cut top ten fighter in the Junior Welterweight division. It’s good to see not only young fighters who are willing to put themselves to the test but fighters management not being afraid to see their guy in a hard fight. Ortiz has a loss and a draw on his record, but really, so what? He’s obviously learnt from those ‘blemishes’ and has improved past the fighters he didn’t beat.

The Ortiz-Harris fight is the co-feature to what promises to be a slugfest between undefeated puncher James Kirkland (24-0, 21 KOs) and Joel Julio (34-2, 31 KOs). Kirkland is coming off a war with Brian Vera on the Hatton-Malignaggi undercard, which he won by 8th round stoppage. Julio recently dropped a 12 round decision to WBO 154lb Champion Sergei Dzinziruk, a fight he took on shortish notice. With both of these guys styles, this fight looms as a potential fight of the year candidate.
